Holden Torana A9X

Peter Brock and the Holden Torana A9X were the perfect combination in Australian racing in the late 1970s.

Together the Holden hero and the company's magnificent muscle car claimed two Bathurst wins, three Bathurst poles, three Sandown enduro wins and an Australian Touring Car Championship.

After three years as a successful privateer racer, Brock re-joined the factory backed Holden Dealer Team in 1978. Brock won his second ATCC title in 1978 with three round wins and then won the Sandown 400 – his fourth straight win in the race.

Success continued at Bathurst where Brock again qualified the A9X Torana on pole position and he and co-driver Jim Richards drove on to claim victory.

The HDT built Brock a new A9X hatchback for 1979. This new car took Brock to victory in the Calder, Wanneroo and Surfers Paradise rounds of the championship, however fellow Torana driver Bob Morris narrowly beat him for the crown. But Brock bounced back, claiming another win in the Sandown endurance race that September and then turning in a performance at Bathurst that is still talked about to this very day.

He and Richards simply decimated the field. Brock took pole position by two seconds and the 05 Torana led each and every one of the 163 laps. It cut five minutes off the race record and finished a staggering 6 laps clear of 2nd place – a record that will never be beaten. Just to underline his dominance and the brilliance of the A9X Torana, Brock broke the lap record on the very last lap of the race scorching to the chequered flag in 2 minutes 21.1 seconds.
This effort has gone down in the history books as perhaps the greatest single-lap ever completed of the Mount Panorama circuit.

In a sign of how special the car was to him, Brock retained ownership of the 1979 Bathurst winning Torana until 1993, the only race car from his career that he kept for any period of time.

The car on offer is a tribute to the mighty A9X Torana that Brock and the HDT raced in 1978-79.
